The viola, the oldest member of the violin family, is prized for its warm, rich sound. While its slightly larger size suits taller players, many are drawn to the viola for its unique, resonant tone. Modern violas are also available in smaller sizes, making it accessible for children and players of all sizes.
The viola’s tone is warm and veiled, resonating slightly above its tuning, much like the smoky voice of Sally Hawkins in Persuasion. Its sound offers a unique depth that adds richness to any performance.
Chamber music projects for string players are sometimes just a one-off morning session, other times recurring projects. Chamber music is a genre of classical music written for small, single-player ensembles—perfect for intimate settings, like a (large) living room. These workshops are designed to help you learn how to make music together in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
Music is sent a month in advance, so you have ample time to become familiar with your part. You'll receive music that is tailored to your technical level, allowing you to fully immerse in the unique aspects of chamber music.
Understanding and expressing the function of your part—whether melody, sub-melody, accompaniment, or supporting role. Developing essential ensemble skills: learning to lead, follow, drive the energy, or create a contrasting voice.
The Magic of String Ensembles: String ensembles have a unique ability to blend and merge, creating a magical sound that is at the heart of these workshops. This blending ability enhances the connection between players, making the experience even more rewarding.
